Luigi Mangione was born in the Sicilian town of Sciacca in 1874. After losing his father at a young age, he immigrated to New York City with his mother and siblings. The family struggled financially, but Luigi persevered, working as a shoemaker’s apprentice and attending night school.

In 1900, Mangione graduated from the New York Homeopathic Medical College. He established a successful medical practice in Brooklyn, becoming the first Italian-American doctor in the borough. Mangione dedicated himself to providing affordable medical care for the immigrant community. He also became actively involved in promoting Italian-American culture and rights.

Mangione witnessed firsthand the discrimination and prejudice faced by Italian-Americans. He co-founded the Order of the Sons of Italy in America (OSIA), an organization dedicated to promoting Italian-American identity and advocating for their rights. As the organization’s National Grand Venerable, Mangione led numerous protests and campaigns against discrimination, including the infamous Sacco and Vanzetti case.

Luigi Mangione’s tireless efforts played a pivotal role in shaping the Italian-American experience in the United States. Through his medical practice, community activism, and leadership in the OSIA, he empowered the Italian-American community and made lasting contributions to American society.
