The Maryland Terrapins basketball program was founded in 1924. The team struggled in its early years, but began to rise to prominence in the 1950s under the leadership of coach Lefty Driesell. Driesell led the Terps to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1958, and they made it to the Final Four two years later.

The 1980s were a golden age for Maryland basketball. The team was led by Len Bias, one of the greatest college basketball players of all time. Bias led the Terps to the NCAA championship game in 1984, and was named National Player of the Year in 1986. Tragically, Bias died of a cocaine overdose two days after being drafted by the Boston Celtics.

After Bias’s death, Maryland basketball entered a period of decline. However, the program was revived in the 1990s under the leadership of coach Gary Williams. Williams led the Terps to their first NCAA championship in 2002, and they made it to the Final Four again in 2001 and 2003.

Mark Turgeon took over as head coach of the Maryland Terrapins in 2011. Turgeon has led the Terps to five NCAA Tournament appearances, including a trip to the Sweet 16 in 2015. The Terps are currently ranked among the top 25 teams in the country, and they are poised to make another run at the NCAA championship.
